BUSINESS LITIGATION

We represent startups, established companies, venture and private equity funds, and entrepreneurs in a variety of industries.

REAL ESTATE LITIGATION

We develop cases with an eye towards the dynamics of the specific dispute and the client’s goals.

ORIGINS

Craig Daniel and Matthew Gluck met as law students in 1999. Out of the gate, they joined top-rated firms, honing their craft with complex, high-stakes cases for mid-size and Fortune 500 clients. In January 2016, Craig and Matt joined forces with one goal: to bring talented lawyers together in a culture defined by teamwork, integrity, creativity, and excellence. In 2017, Craig and Matt persuaded Gordon Atkinson to join the team, putting his 30+ years of litigation experience to work for Gluck Daniel Atkinson’s clients. Justin Sowa joined the partnership in 2021.

JUDGMENT

A lawyer’s most important tool is their judgment. Every case starts with a unique set of facts, personalities, and client goals. At Gluck Daniel Atkinson, our attorneys’ judgment has been shaped by years or decades of training and experience working at premier national and regional law firms; by thousands of hours in the trenches litigating disputes and negotiating settlements. We practice together because we believe that our collective wisdom helps us achieve better outcomes for our clients, and so we discuss strategies at formal and informal meetings to get the benefit of diverse viewpoints from the different members of our team. Sometimes the clearest-eyed observer is an attorney who hasn’t been immersed in the details of the client’s case. Sometimes the detailed knowledge of the documents belonging to a junior associate who has become the “master of the facts” is the critical piece of the puzzle to guide the team’s collective judgment. At Gluck Daniel Atkinson, everyone has a seat at the table, but ultimately the senior attorneys are using their experience and expertise to guide the Firm’s clients in making critical decisions.

A good lawyer calls on years of experience to find the winning strategy for each unique case. Sometimes that means aggressive lawyering. Other times, creative problem-solving. Most often, a combination of both.

COMMUNITY

Gluck Daniel Atkinson lawyers are engaged in the community. Whether serving on boards or providing pro bono services, we believe in giving back.

The firm is litigation counsel for local organizations including San Francisco AIDS Foundation and OnePurpose School, a free donor-supported public charter school focused on providing an innovative education to San Francisco’s highest poverty neighborhoods, in an effort to break the cycle of poverty.

Our lawyers volunteer their time to the legal community and to low-income individuals and nonprofits through direct Pro Bono representation and through service to the Bar Association of San Francisco.

Representative Pro Bono Matters:

  • 2018-2022: Individual Representation of Disabled Clients – Pro bono service to clients suffering from mental health issues, including one who was moved to a residential mental health facility during the course of representation. The Firm resolved a complex dispute over a co-development agreement to remodel Clients’ Mission District mixed-use property that had been damaged by a fire in the 1990s and which was in increasingly derelict condition for 20+ years thereafter. The Firm avoided both foreclosure by a hard-money lender and enforcement actions by the SF City Attorney’s office while negotiating a resolution of the co-development agreement to facilitate a sale of the property with an option to buy a condo at a discounted price. Later, after the developer failed to develop the property as agreed, a second round of litigation over the option provision of the settlement agreement resulted in a further cash recovery for the clients. The Firm coordinated with special needs trust counsel to ensure that clients’ entitlement to critical benefits was not imperiled.
  • 2017-2018: Legal Aid of Marin – After consulting on a limited-scope basis with a client who was threatened with eviction for having the family’s third child, the Firm agreed to take on the representation and negotiated with representatives of the management company and landlord to help the family stay in their home.
  • Bar Association of San Francisco
    • 2016: Working through the Bar Association of San Francisco’s Justice and Diversity Center (JDC), the Firm worked as a mentor with a younger lawyer to help a Hispanic family remain in their home, an illegal unit in San Francisco’s Outer Mission neighborhood, resisting three attempts by the Landlord to force them out. First, the developer landlord tried to evict the Firm’s clients after refusing their rent payments, then he took matters into his own hands and improperly turned off the gas and electricity, and finally he sought a permit with the city building department to “demolish” the illegal unit by removing the kitchen.
    • Also through JDC, the Firm has volunteered with the Housing Negotiation Project, assisting San Francisco Tenants facing eviction (unlawful detainer) on a limited-scope basis at mandatory settlement conferences before trial. Successes include helping tenants stay in their homes, or obtaining additional time and/or money to help them transition to new housing.
